Former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's passport was reportedly confiscated at the airport in Tehran on his way to the Central American country of Guatemala and he was not allowed to leave the country.

According to the Telegram account of the "dolatebahar.ir" website, which is known to be close to the former president, Ahmadinejad, who was at the airport to go to Guatemala to attend an international symposium on the management of water resources, was prevented by intelligence forces.

"Persons identifying themselves as intelligence and security officials arrived at Imam Khomeini Airport today, confiscated Ahmadinejad's passport and prevented the servant of the Iranian nation from traveling to Guatemala," the report said.

Iran's Ittilaat newspaper reported that security officials advised Ahmadinejad not to leave the country due to "the possibility of his arrest due to international sanctions" and "unstable security and political conditions" in Guatemala, and reported that Ahmadinejad's visit was canceled.

HAD BEEN PLACED ON THE SANCTIONS LIST

On September 18, the day of the Tehran-Washington prisoner swap, US President Joe Biden announced that he had placed former Iranian President Ahmadinejad and the Iranian Intelligence Ministry on a sanctions list for their role in the "unjustified" detention of US citizens in Iran.

Ahmadinejad served two terms as Iran's president from 2005 to 2013. The US administration blames former Iranian President Ahmadinejad and the Iranian Ministry of Intelligence for the disappearance of former Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) employee Robert Levinson, who was reported missing in Iran in 2007.
