The US federal transportation agency, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), shared the results of a study spanning 3 years.

In the research conducted by NHTSA, which examined accidents involving vehicles with autopilot for 3 years, it was announced that Tesla brand cars have been involved in at least 13 fatal accidents since August 2021 when used with autopilot.

Authorities also underlined that Tesla vehicles were involved in many more accidents that caused serious injury while in autopilot mode.

"Predictable driver misuse clearly has an impact," the statement said. It also said there was evidence that "Tesla's weak driver engagement system does not match the autopilot's authorized operating capabilities", causing a "critical safety vulnerability".
