Until Monday's sale, the previous record sale was another huia feather, which sold for $8,400 in 2010.

According to the latest figures from Gold Broker, the feather weighs about 9 grams, making it much more valuable than gold.

The feather sold for $5,169 per gram, compared to $127 per gram for gold.

HuiaThe Huia was the largest of New Zealand's wattlebird species, known for its beautiful song, predominantly black shiny feathers and white long tail feathers at the tips.

The last confirmed sighting of a Huia was in 1907, but it is believed they were still alive into the 1920s.
