The US State Department issued a written statement after Chinese ships rammed two Philippine vessels in disputed waters.

The statement said that the United States stands with the Philippines in the face of China's "dangerous and unlawful actions" that hinder the Philippines' resupply mission, and that the Second Thomas Shoal, where the incident took place, "is located within the Philippines' exclusive economic zone and continental shelf."

Noting that the Chinese Coast Guard "violated international law by deliberately interfering" with the Philippines' ships' exercise of freedom of navigation on the high seas, the statement said that with this attitude, China "endangered the safety of the Filipino crew and prevented the necessary materials from reaching the BRP Sierra Madre ship."
