Rents rose by 5.6 percent in England, compared to 6.9 percent in Wales and 6 percent in Scotland. Updated data on rents in Northern Ireland have not yet been released.
The capital, London, has been recorded as the city with the fastest annual increase in rents since January 2006, when rents rose by 6.2 percent.
House prices in the UK increased by 0.2 percent annually in August. The price increase was 0.7 percent in July.
The average house price was calculated as 291 thousand pounds in August.
While the house price remained unchanged in England, it increased by 1.1 percent in Scotland and decreased by 0.1 percent in Wales.
