Japanese public broadcaster NHK TV announced that the waves could reach up to 5 meters, urging coastal residents to 'get to high ground or the top of a nearby building as quickly as possible'.
It was reported that there were collapsed buildings in some places where the earthquake was effective. While no announcement was made regarding the loss of life, the first waves reached the shore in some areas.

A tsunami warning was also issued for North Korea and the far eastern region of Russia.
