The sale took place during an auction of stage costumes owned by the restaurant and resort chain Planet Hollywood. The advertisement for the sale of the accessory caused a lot of controversy among fans.

James Cameron, the director of the blockbuster movie Titanic, said he received dozens of emails calling Rose "selfish" and Jack "stupid" for the scene in which Jack freezes to death while Rose lies on the wooden door. However, he put an end to the controversy by saying that Jack should have died according to the script.

Other props at the auction included the whip from Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, which sold for $525,000.

A Spider-Man costume worn by Toby Maguire sold for $125,000, while the axe used by Jack Nicholson in The Shining fetched the same amount.

Heritage Auctions said the auction raised $15 million, making it one of the most successful sales of a collection of props and costumes.
