The sale took place during an auction of stage costumes owned by the restaurant and resort chain Planet Hollywood. The advertisement for the sale of the accessory caused a lot of controversy among fans.

James Cameron, the director of the blockbuster movie Titanic, said he received dozens of emails calling Rose "selfish" and Jack "stupid" for the scene in which Jack freezes to death while Rose lies on the wooden door. However, he put an end to the controversy by saying that Jack should have died according to the script.
