The unveiling of Russia's first electric car, dubbed "Amber" this week, has become a subject of ridicule on social media.

The ugliness of the design, nicknamed the "Tesla killer" and likened to a duckling, which was designed and produced entirely in Russia, was especially mocked on social media.

Social media users believe that the new car, designed by Moscow University students and academics, is as ugly as Fiat's Multipla model car produced in the 1990s.

Although Fiat's Multipla was previously declared the ugliest design, it also won the award for the best family car in the world.

The electric vehicles, called Amber, will be produced at the Avtator plant in Kaliningrad Oblast, where foreign cars such as Kia, BMW and Ford were assembled before Western sanctions.

Until 2008, Avtator was one of the world's largest car manufacturers and assemblers. The company, which was operated by many brands, closed down after Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Ukrainian social media users are among the first to mock the design.

Mass production of this new vehicle is expected to start in 2025, with a target of 50,000 electric cars per year. However, it is also among the news that the final version of the car may be completely different from the first design.
