Hundreds of police officers in four cities were conducting a search operation for 40-year-old Robert Card. Card's lifeless body was found near a recycling plant in the countryside. The attacker is believed to have committed suicide.
Earlier, the attacker's vehicle, gun and a note, which was said to be a suicide note, were found.
In Maine, a largely rural state located near Canada's northeastern border, half of all adults own guns. The state does not require a license to carry a gun.
