US President Joe Biden, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak issued a joint statement after meeting to discuss the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
The leaders emphasized their steadfast support for Israel and "unequivocally condemn Hamas and its horrific acts of terrorism."
"We make it clear that Hamas' terrorist acts have no justification, no legitimacy and must be universally condemned," the leaders said, adding that terrorism cannot be justified.
"In recent days, the world has watched in horror as Hamas terrorists have slaughtered families in their homes, massacred more than 200 young people enjoying a music festival, and kidnapped elderly women, children and entire families currently held hostage," the leaders said.
"WE RECOGNIZE THE LEGITIMATE ASPIRATIONS OF THE PALESTINIAN PEOPLE"
They pledged their support for Israel's efforts to defend itself and its people, but warned that any hostile party to this country should not take advantage of these attacks.
"We all recognize the legitimate aspirations of the Palestinian people and support steps towards justice and freedom for Israelis and Palestinians alike. But there is no doubt that Hamas does not represent these aspirations and offers the Palestinian people nothing but more terror and bloodshed."
"In the days ahead, we will remain united and coordinated as allies and mutual friends of Israel to ensure Israel's ability to defend itself and ultimately create the conditions for a peaceful and integrated Middle East region," the Western leaders concluded.
