Starship, SpaceX's uncrewed spacecraft developed to carry astronauts to the Moon and beyond, has failed in its second attempt to launch into space.

The two-part spacecraft lifted off from Elon Musk's Starbase launch site near Texas and rose about 140 kilometers above the ground during its planned 90-minute flight into space, euronews reported.

But the first stage of the 'Super Heavy' rocket carrying the Starship cruise ship failed to separate from the core stage and exploded over the Gulf of Mexico, according to SpaceX's webcast.

SpaceX's livestream host John Insprucker said, "We lost data from the second stage. We think we may have lost the second stage," he said.

About eight minutes into the test, a camera image monitoring the Starship booster showed an explosion, suggesting the vehicle had failed at the time.

The rocket's altitude at the time was 148 kilometers.

Last April, the first attempt to launch SpaceX also ended in an explosion. The explosion occurred 4 minutes after the launch.
