In Ohio, USA, a woman, Kristel Candelario, was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for leaving her 16-month-old baby at home and going on vacation.

Kristel Candelario, 32, pleaded guilty last month to the murder of her daughter Jailyn.

65F88C05230000Ad28657134Prosecutors said Kristel Candelario left the toddler alone on a playground at their Cleveland home in June while traveling to Detroit and Puerto Rico.

When Kristel Candelario returned from her trip, she found Jailyn lying on the ground and called police, according to the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor's Office.

She changed her child's clothes before emergency responders arrived and pronounced her dead shortly afterward.

InfantProsecutors said the toddler was severely dehydrated at the time of her death, and medical experts determined she died of starvation and dehydration.

Candelario addressed the judge and the court, saying that Jailyn's death had caused her great pain.

"I'm not trying to justify what I did, but no one knew how much I suffered and what I went through," he said through a Spanish interpreter.
