Police said Jahmari Reid, a high school student from the Trelawny area in northwest Jamaica, disappeared alone at sea on Monday.

Reid was spearfishing in the waters near Montego Bay, a famous tourist town just north of the island.
Police said fishermen found his body the next day with wounds from a shark attack.

Local media reported that the teenager's head and one arm had been severed by the shark, while efforts were underway to capture the shark and search for the teenager's severed head.

Michael Reid, Jahmari's father, told the Jamaica Observer:

“I can't believe he went out to sea on his own and this is the result, it's sad to know. I feel terrible.”

According to the Florida-based International Shark Attack File, shark attacks are rare around the world, with a total of 69 unprovoked attacks confirmed worldwide last year and 14 deaths reported.

Only three unprovoked shark attacks have been reported in Jamaica since 1749, according to the dossier, which is managed by the Florida Museum of Natural History and the American Elasmobranch Society.
