Racist attacks marred Italy's championship, which won the gold medal in women's volleyball for the first time in its history.
After the championship, fans wanted to honor Italy's national player Paola Egonu and painted her picture on the Olympic Committee wall in Rome.
However, this work was the target of an ugly attack. The attackers painted Egonu's skin color white and scrawled the words “Stop racism” on the ball she hit. Reacting to the incident, sports fans painted the white parts black again and added back the message “Stop racism”.
