Hamza Yusuf said that his mother-in-law and father-in-law, who live in Dundee, Scotland, traveled to Gaza to see his father-in-law's sick mother.

Yousef said they were unable to leave Gaza and that the British Foreign Office could not guarantee their safe return.

He said that he and his wife were "very worried", fearing they would not survive.

Nadia El-Nakla's family traveled to Gaza about a week ago and were there when Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel this weekend, killing hundreds.

Yousef told the BBC that he strongly condemned Hamas' "unjust" actions:

"In the last 48 and 72 hours, unfortunately, we have seen many innocent lives lost.

"For me, the life of an innocent Israeli is equal to the life of an innocent Palestinian."
