According to South Korean agency Yonhap, the incident took place in the morning hours during Lee's visit to a construction site on Busan's Gadeok Island.

The assailant approached Lee on the pretext of getting his autograph while he was answering questions from press members and wounded him in the neck with a sharp instrument in his hand.

After the attack, Lee, who was unconscious with bleeding in his neck, was taken to hospital for treatment.

While the attacker, who is said to be a male, was captured at the scene, detailed information about his identity and description has not yet been released.

Presidential Spokesperson Kim Soo-kyung reported that President Yoon Suk Yeol ordered Lee to be hospitalized and treated as quickly as possible after the incident, and that the attack should be investigated and the facts established.
