In recent months, a new type of deepfake known as voice cloning has emerged, where artificial intelligence (AI) is used to simulate your voice.
OpenAI, creator of ChatGPT, is the latest tech giant to develop voice cloning software.
The creepy technology can copy anyone's voice in just 15 seconds. OpenAI said the technology was "too risky" for public use, especially in an election year.
"We recognize that producing speech that resembles human voices carries serious risks, and these risks are particularly relevant in an election year," the company said in a statement.
OpenAI unveiled its "Voice Engine" voice cloning technology just a week after filing a trademark application for the name.
The company claims it can replicate a person's voice using just 15 seconds of recorded speech.
Eventually, the development of this technology could help OpenAI compete with other brands such as Amazon's Alexa.
