According to NSA Research Director Gil Herrera, the agency's concern is that an unforeseen advance in quantum technology could break encryption systems used to protect everything from financial transactions to sensitive communications involving nuclear weapons.
Speaking last week at an event organized by the Intelligence and National Security Alliance, Herrera said no country yet has a quantum computer that it considers useful.
