"We don't think this was a random or indiscriminate shooting of passengers," police chief Michael Kemper said at a press conference.

New York police announced that a 34-year-old passenger who was seriously wounded in a fight in which a person opened fire first inside the car and then in the subway station died in hospital. A 14-year-old girl, a 15-year-old boy and 5 people aged 28, 29 and 71 were injured in the shooting.

Four of them are in serious but not life-threatening condition and some of them may have been involved in a fight.

Police are searching for the attacker

Police announced that operations are underway to apprehend the gunman and others identified as being involved in the fight. The attack occurred at 4:38 p.m. local time and the subway station was reportedly crowded with people returning from school and heading to work for the evening shift.

"We do not believe this was a random or indiscriminate shooting of passengers," police chief Michael Kemper said at a press conference.

The New York subway carries an average of 3.8 million passengers every working day. In 2023, 570 violent incidents were recorded on the New York subway.

In the New York subway, 10 people were injured in the last armed attack organized by an armed man at the Brooklyn stop in 2022.
