Corman, 98, passed away at his home in California. Roger Corman, one of the most important names in independent cinema, died at his home in Santa Monica on Thursday, May 9. His daughter Catherine Corman announced the news of the master director's death in a statement to the Associated Press.

"My father was generous, open-hearted and kind to everyone who knew him. When asked how he wanted to be remembered, he said, 'I was a filmmaker, that's all.

The director also helped launch the careers of other Hollywood directors and actors such as Martin Scorsese, James Cameron, Francis Ford Coppola, Jack Nicholson, Bruce Dern and Peter Fonda, who called Roger Corman "our mentor".

In 2009, the veteran director was awarded an Academy Honorary Award for his rich support of films and filmmakers.
