Google CEO Sundar Pichai told his employees that there will be new layoffs this year.

As companies begin to use artificial intelligence and automation technologies to lighten workloads, Pichai's announcement strengthens the signs that layoffs will continue this year.

"The layoffs will not be as extensive as last year's and will not affect every team," Pichai said, according to The Verge, citing an internal memo.

A Google representative confirmed to Reuters that an email was sent to employees, but did not provide further details on the content of the memo.

Last week, Google announced layoffs across several divisions, including Voice Assistant units and hardware teams responsible for products like Pixel, Nest and Fitbit, as well as ad sales and augmented reality teams.

Google announced in January 2023 that it would lay off 12 thousand people.
