New York is home to around 9 million registered residents, with the number of tourists reaching up to 20 million. The state is also home to about one and a half million Jews. By 2024, New York will have the largest Jewish population outside Tel Aviv. More than half of the Jewish population is located in Brooklyn.
MANY PEOPLE ARRESTED
In the first hours of Tuesday, a mysterious synagogue belonging to Orthodox Jews was discovered in Brooklyn. Jews fought hard to prevent the closure of the tunnel, which was discovered by construction workers by chance. Police officers who came to the scene upon a tip-off arrested 10 people. Rabbi Yosef Braun, who runs the synagogue, described the events as horrific and a shame for Orthodox Judaism.
THEY TURNED OUT TO BE HASIDIS
It is believed that members of the Hashidi branch of Judaism have been digging these tunnels for many years, although the purpose of the tunnels is still unclear. The tunnels, some of which were discovered in December, have multiple entrances. The US media also suggested that the tunnels may have been dug four years ago, but did not provide conclusive evidence. On the other hand, COL Live, a Hashemite news website, reported that most of the men in the tunnels came from Israel.
