An investigation was launched after a human leg was found prominently displayed in a garbage container near a bank in New York City.

The severed body part was seen hanging out of a red dumpster near TD Bank in Queens on Wednesday, the New York Post reported.

New York Police Department (NYPD) officers were called to the scene, 164th Street and Union Road, at around 6:30 p.m. after a cleaner at the bank in Hillcrest noticed the leg while taking out the trash.

According to unconfirmed reports online, the leg had maggots on it, which may have been in the bin for up to 9 days between garbage collection periods.
