Adam Johnson, who played for the British professional ice hockey club Nottingham Panthers, died after being hit in the neck by an opponent's skate during the match.
In the 35th minute of the Challenge Cup match between Nottingham Panthers and Sheffield Steelers, the first intervention to the 29-year-old US player, who was on the ground after his opponent's intervention, was made by the medical teams on the sidelines.
Despite the intervention, Johnson died due to a skate blow to the neck.
Describing the incident as a "crazy accident" and expressing great sadness, the Nottingham Panthers Club expressed their condolences to the player's family, friends and loved ones.
