Mainz, competing in the German Bundesliga, terminated the contract of the player they transferred a month ago for sharing support for Palestine.
"FSV Mainz 05 has banned Anwar El Ghazi from training and matches. The suspension is a reaction to the 28-year-old's social media post on Sunday evening, which was later deleted." the club said.
"In that post, El Ghazi had taken a position on the conflict in the Middle East that was unacceptable for the club," the statement said, adding that the club had taken a neutral stance on the conflict between the two countries. A detailed discussion was held between the board and the player before his release."
THEY EXPLAINED THE REASON FOR TERMINATION
"Mainz 05 respects that there are different perspectives on the complex Middle East conflict that has been going on for decades. However, our club maintains a clear distance from the content of the post as it is not in line with our club's values."
