On Thursday, Schneider deleted a social media post calling for the execution of people on death row after a backlash. A debate began on social media about whether Schneider should be prosecuted for the post.
Schneider is known for his role as Bo Duke in The Dukes of Hazzard.
In his social media post, Schneider wrote, "Mr. President, I think you are guilty of treason and should be publicly hanged. So should your son. Your response...? Sincerely, John Schneider," he wrote.
Thousands of X users responded to the actor's comment under a post in which Biden called Donald Trump "the greatest threat to democracy."
Investigative journalist Victoria Brownworth wrote, "There is zero evidence of treason. Get out of Fox News circles," wrote Victoria Brownworth, an investigative journalist. Another user wrote, "Wow! Calling for the hanging of a sitting president. I hope the Secret Service comes to your door with an answer."
Sources told Deadline that the Secret Service launched a preliminary investigation into the matter on Thursday.
In a statement to Deadline, Schneider denied the allegations that he called for Biden's execution, saying, "I have never called for violence against the President of the United States. My view is that when some of our leaders in Washington lose their way, I have the right to criticize them. Corruption is out of control. Transparency and accountability are important for a constitutional republic to survive. There is no threat in my statement."
