According to the images shared on X, a large cargo ship hit one of the bridge's columns around 01.30 local time. After the impact, a fire broke out on the ship.

3-126While part of the 2.57-kilometer-long bridge collapsed due to the impact, many vehicles on the bridge fell into the water during the impact.

4-97In a statement made by the Maryland Department of Transportation, it was reported that all roads leading to the Francis Scott Key Bridge were closed to traffic on both sides.

Maryland Governor Wes Moore's spokesperson Carter Elliott released the following statement;

"My office is in close communication with U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott, Baltimore County Executive Johnny Olszewski and the Baltimore Fire Department as emergency personnel are on the scene following the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge.

3-127I have declared a State of Emergency here in Maryland and we are working with an interagency team to quickly deploy federal resources from the Biden Administration. We are grateful to the brave men and women who worked to rescue those involved and prayed for everyone's safety.

As we continue to assess and respond to this tragedy, we will be in close contact with federal, state, and local agencies conducting rescue efforts.
