French President Emmanuel Macron announced the dissolution of the National Assembly and called for early elections. 

French President Macron decided to dissolve the parliament and call early general elections after the far-right came first by a clear margin in the European Parliament elections.

Macron said, "I have decided to call for early elections. I am dissolving the National Assembly. The results of the European Parliament elections are not good for my government. From 30 June, I will call for new parliamentary elections."

According to the exit polls in the European Parliament elections, French far-right candidate Jordan Bardella received 32 per cent of the votes and Valerie Hayer, the candidate of Macron's party, received 15.40 per cent. French far-right leader Marine Le Pen said, "The result of the EP elections was historic".
