Obama said on Medium that Israel has the "right to self-defense" and added, "But the world is watching developments in the region closely. An Israeli military strategy that ignores human casualties could eventually backfire."
Pointing out that thousands of Palestinians lost their lives in the bombardments against Gaza, Obama said, "Many of them were children. Hundreds of thousands were forced to flee their homes."
Obama also criticized the Israeli government's Gaza policy, saying:
"The Israeli government's decision to cut off food, electricity and water to the blockaded civilian population not only exacerbates the worsening humanitarian crisis, but could harden Palestinian attitudes for generations to come, undermine global support for Israel, play into the hands of Israel's enemies, and undermine longstanding efforts to achieve peace and stability in the region."
