"I think I went into hiding. It was a role that changed my career almost to the point of ridicule after the positive reviews I got for The Fall," he said on BBC Radio 4's Desert Island Discs program.

Dornan said that he and his wife Amelia went to the country house of Sam Taylor-Johnson, the director of the movie, "They opened their house to us, we hid there for a while and isolated ourselves from the world a little bit."

Dornan, who also starred in the second and third movies of the series, said, "The movie made so much money that it was greenlit for two or three movies overnight. It was a strange thing because then you feel like you're being ridiculed and you're contractually obligated to make two more movies knowing that you're going to be even more damned."

Fifty Shades of Grey, like the novel it was based on, was about the sadomasochistic relationship between Anastasia Ana Steele (Dakota Johnson) and the enigmatic businessman Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan).

Although the movie was a huge commercial success, grossing more than $500 million at the worldwide box office, it was panned by critics.
