Andrew Rudansky, press spokesperson for the New York City Housing Department, announced that the synagogue and some surrounding buildings will be evacuated for safety reasons.
US police have uncovered illegally constructed tunnels under a synagogue in New York.
Rudansky, press spokesperson for the New York City Housing Department, told news agency The Associated Press (AP) that the synagogue and some of the surrounding buildings above the tunnels will be evacuated for safety reasons after extensive investigations.
Rudansky said the tunnels had caused structural problems in a two-story building behind the synagogue and that an evacuation order had been issued for this building as well. Pointing out that the tunnels under the synagogue and some buildings were illegally dug, the spokesperson said that rubble, dirt and some tools were found in these tunnels. Rudansky also noted that after the evacuation process is implemented, reinforcement work will be carried out in the buildings.
