The recent tension in the Balkans with Kosovo has caused Serbia to bring back compulsory military service to the agenda.

"As tensions continue to escalate in the Balkans, Serbia should reintroduce compulsory military service," the Serbian Defense Ministry said in a statement.

The proposal, which is stated to be made "in order to increase the defense capabilities of the Serbian Armed Forces through rejuvenation and improvement in the training of active and reserve forces", envisages that the service will last four months.
