The French National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (INSEE) stated that birth rates in the country in 2022 and the first half of 2023 fell to the lowest level since the end of World War II.

INSEE stated that 726 thousand children were born in 2022, with a 2.2 percent decrease in births compared to 2021 and a 13 percent decrease compared to 2010.

Compared to 2010, when the highest level in recent years was recorded, birth rates fell by 3 percent for women aged 25-29, 4 percent for women aged 30-34, and increased by 3 percent for women over 40 last year.

The data showed that the health crisis caused by the Covid-19 pandemic contributed to the decline in 2021.

In addition to the decline in birth rates, there were also changes in the average age of women giving birth and the rate of out-of-wedlock childbirth.

The average maternal age at first birth increased from 30.2 years in 2012 to 31.2 years in 2022, and the rate of out-of-wedlock births increased from 57 percent to 65 percent in the same years.
