US President Joe Biden suggested that Hamas targeted efforts to normalize relations between Israel and Saudi Arabia with its attacks on Israel on October 7.

Speaking at a fundraiser on Friday, Biden said, "One of the reasons Hamas attacked Israel was because they knew I was going to sit down with the Saudis. The Saudis wanted to recognize Israel."

Under former US President Donald Trump, Saudi Arabia agreed to allow its Gulf neighbors the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain to improve relations with Israel in 2020.

However, Riyadh has argued that Palestinian statehood aspirations should take precedence over its own relations with Israel.

Normalizing Israel's relations with Saudi Arabia and other Arab states was one of the priorities of Secretary of State Antony Blinken during his visit to Riyadh in June.

However, Blinken said that no progress should be expected anytime soon.

On October 8, after the Hamas attacks, Blinken said it "would not be surprising if one of the motivations for the attack was to disrupt efforts to bring Saudi Arabia and Israel together."

Speaking on CBS's 60 Minutes last Sunday, Biden said the prospect of normalization "is still alive, but it will take time."
