Bernard Hill's management agency Lou Coulson reported that the British actor died in the early hours of today morning. The cause of the actor's death was not disclosed. 

Bernard Hill was best known for his roles as Captain Edward Smith in Titanic and King Théoden in The Lord of the Rings.

Scottish musician Barbara Dickson said after Hill's death: "He was a truly magnificent actor. It was a privilege that our paths crossed."

Born on December 17, 1944 in Blackley, Manchester, England, Bernard Hill played Captain Edward Smith in the 1997 Oscar-winning film and King Théoden in The Lord of the Rings. Other notable roles in Hill's career include 1976's I, Claudius, 1982's Gandhi, 1989's Shirley Valentine, 2002's The Scorpion King and the 2008 Tom Cruise film Valkyrie. Hill has received many awards throughout his long and successful career. These include Best Cast Awards from the Screen Actors Guild and the Film Critics Circle.
