In his 30-year career, German-born US actor Christian Oliver, known for his roles in films with the likes of Tom Cruise and George Clooney, died on Thursday along with his two daughters in a plane crash off the coast of a Caribbean island.

Oliver, born Christian Klepser, and his two daughters took off in a single-engine plane at 12:10 p.m. Thursday from a small airport on the island of Bequia in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, authorities said.

According to the Saint Vincent and the Grenadines police force, the plane, which was en route to St. Lucia, experienced an unspecified problem shortly after takeoff and crashed into the sea.

Fishermen, divers and the coast guard arrived on the scene immediately after the crash. They recovered the bodies of all four people on board: 51-year-old Oliver, his daughters Annik and Madita Klepser, aged 10 and 12, and the pilot and owner of the plane, Robert Sachs. The bodies were taken by boat to a morgue in Bequia.

Oliver starred in The Good German with Clooney and Cate Blanchett, Emile Hirsch's Fast Racer and Valkyrie starring Tom Cruise.
